Frequently Asked Questions
We appreciate your membership at Syracuse Federal Credit Union and will try to assist you in answering your questions. Please read the following carefully.
1. WHY IS THE CREDIT UNION CHANGING MY ACCOUNT NUMBER? Your account number remains the same. The current numbers on the bottom of the checks you are using does not accurately reflect your account number at the credit union. With the advent of “Check21“ (electronic posting of checks), the credit union is experiencing check posting difficulties. The only manner this can permanently be resolved is to issue new checks.
2. WHAT DOES “MICR” NUMBER MEAN? The MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) is used to describe the numbers and symbols on the bottom of your checks. The first nine digits starting on the left are the Transit & Routing number and the second fourteen are the numbers necessary to debit or credit your account.
3. AM I PAYING FOR THE NEW CHECKS? No, there is no charge to affected members.
4. WHY DO I NEED TO CONTACT THE COMPANYS THAT DEBIT OR CREDIT MY ACCOUNT? You must notify all vendors who are debiting or crediting your account, example Verizon, your Insurance Company and/or anyone who electronically post to your account. The credit union can not contact your vendors due to privacy issues.
5. I HAVE CHECKS THAT HAVE NOT CLEARED MY ACCOUNT YET. We request you start using your new checks immediately. This will assure your checks clear properly. The credit union will continue to clear old checks still outstanding for approximately 30 days. As soon as you receive your new checks please dispose of your old checks to prevent any usage in the future.
6. MY CHECKS WHERE NOT ORDERED THRU THE CREDIT UNION. Please notify the vendor immediately to reprint your checks with the correct information.
7. THE CHECKS I RECEIVED DID NOT HAVE THE JOINT OWNER ON THE CHECKS. Please contact the credit union to verify the information on file. If necessary new checks will be reprinted at no cost.
8. I HAVE GIVEN INFORMATION TO DEBIT/CREDIT MY ACCOUNT AND FORGOT WHO THEY ARE. Your most current statement details vendors that debit or credit your account including your direct deposit. You may also use CUE, free online access to your account, to see who debit or credits your account.
